One particular research project involved 27 people, 8 male and 19 female, who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirming a disc herniation in either their neck or lower back. The individuals documented that they were experiencing pain, limited range of motion, and sensory issues bad enough to keep them off work.
During the course of the research period, the participants were managed using one of two common chiropractic practices: traction for herniated discs in the cervical area or flexion distraction for the men and women who had herniation issues in the lumbar area.
Each person was treated four or five times per week for the first two weeks, then three times weekly, and then as needed for the remainder of the study. Based on the seriousness of the disc herniation, therapy varied anywhere from six weeks to six months, with MRIs being conducted at a variety of stages to determine what effect, if any, the chiropractic care was having in regard to the disc herniation.
The authors found that 80 percent of the patients enjoyed a "good clinical outcome," meaning reduced pain and a reduction in other symptoms, such as numbness. Furthermore, 77 percent of these people also showed MRI evidence that their disc herniation was either reduced or resolved completely. This resulted in 78 percent of the study participants being able to return to their place of work and led the researchers to conclude that chiropractic care is both "safe and helpful" for disc herniations.

According to The American Academy of Pain Medicine, more Americans suffer with chronic pain than diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. In addition, neck pain is the third most documented type of pain, beat out only by back problems and headache.
Of course, a lot of people come to our Hopkins office looking for neck pain treatment, and Full Motion Chiropractic has helped many of them find relief. This is a smart decision, as some studies have shown that over 90 percent of neck pain patients improve with chiropractic.
Studies Confirm Chiropractic Works
A study published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy included 64 men and women who were suffering with neck problems. Approximately half were placed in an experimental group and the other half were assigned to a comparison group. Both were given chiropractic adjustments of the neck as well as a home exercise program, whereas the experimental group also received adjustments of the thoracic spine.
Data was gathered before treatment began and one week after the adjustments. The authors found that 94 percent of the experimental group claimed "significantly greater improvements" in regard to pain and disability in their neck symptoms. Just 35% of the patients who received neck adjustments showed the same level of improvement, showing that looking at the entire spinal column is an important part of restoring the body's normal function.
Yet another study posted in Physical Therapy involved 60 individuals between the ages of 18 and 60 who reported dealing with neck pain. Each man or woman was randomly assigned to one of two groups--thoracic spine thrust manipulation or non-thrust manipulation--with follow-up exams occurring two and four days after the treatments.
The investigators discovered that the study participants who received the thrust manipulations (the same manipulations that provided such positive results in the first report) "experienced greater reductions in disability" than the patients who received the non-thrust adjustments. Their pain was lower as well, which shows that this type of approach offers many benefits.
Help After Failed Medical Procedures
One study found the same type of positive results after thoracic adjustments in a woman who had a failed neck surgical treatment. This particular case involved a 46-year-old woman who had recently had neck surgery but still suffered with neck pain, headaches, pain in her elbow, and muscle fatigue.
The patient reported reduced pain in her neck and reduced headache intensity, immediately after the first chiropractic treatment session. After six weeks of care, which involved chiropractic, exercise, and patient education, the patient still rated her pain at a zero on a scale of 1 to 10. Her neck disability improved as well, with a rating score that represented that it was a "great deal better."
It is studies like these that prove the advantages of chiropractic care, even if you've already attempted medical procedures that didn't provide relief. The thoracic outlet is a bundle of nerves and blood vessels that travel through your neck and shoulder to your arm. These vessels don't have a lot of room, so they pass under and between the strong bands of muscles that support your head.

We care for a large number of people in our Hopkins office and Full Motion Chiropractic has helped countless people eliminate a variety of health problems. However, a common concern that seems to prevent a lot of people from seeking treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Fortunately, according to three separate studies (out of countless on the issue), the answer to this question is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe
The first research paper(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 adults. Each test subject was affected by spinal pain, and half of the patients received real chiropractic adjustments while the remaining patients were given two fake chiropractic treatments. Information was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to identify if any undesirable side effects occurred as a result of the genuine chiropractic adjustments.
The doctors found that no one documented any serious unfavorable side effects in any way after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some individuals did state that they got a headache (just 9% of people) or muscle stiffness (37%) after treatment, but the effects were not of a serious nature.
Nationwide Survey Reports that Chiropractic Care is Safe
The next study(2), also released in the influential journal, Spine, was performed in an attempt to ascertain the safety of chiropractic care. The test group was much larger as it involved just under 20,000 individuals. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.
Once again, the researchers found no serious negative side effects. The authors determined the risk of total side effects to be about six out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. Plus, just as with the first study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, side effects such as dizziness (less than 2%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children
The third study(3) is unique from the previous two pieces of research, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this case, researchers analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic treatment sessions.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the young ones, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse side effects. When parents were questioned, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Additionally, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."
