By now you've probably heard the phrase "Sitting is the new smoking". Obviously they are two drastically different activities but the one similar outcome that studies have proven is that both can dramatically shorten your lifespan. We of course knew this about smoking a long time ago. While smoking is a choice, sitting is pretty unavoidable. Unfortunately the alternative, standing all day, does not actually improve outcomes either.
From the macro to the micro our bodies need movement to survive. We need both physical exercise daily and also down to the joint level we need smooth, unrestricted movement between our bones (what chiropractic adjustments provide). The best alternative for sitting or standing all day is simply a little of BOTH! A sit-stand desk of some sort is the key, along with frequent walks around the office as much as the job permits throughout the day. A HUGE part of all of this movement stuff is just plain getting ourselves out of the bad posture we all end up with when sitting or standing at a computer for long periods of time.
So what does "bad posture" really mean? Well, it's the slumped forward upper back, the shoulders forced forward as we reach for the keyboard (or phones), and the forward positioning of the head that keeps getting worse the longer we are sitting. We've all seen it and we all do it.
It's almost impossible to sit up tall with perfect posture all day which is why to make up for this I tell all my patients who work at a desk to do these 3 simple (but admittedly difficult to be consistent with) stretches hourly ideally or at least 3 times during a workday.
1. Relief Stretch - Sit up straight, pull your neck back so your head is directly above (and not in front of) your body. At the same time pull your arms back with a stretch in the front of your chest as you inhale slowly for about 3 seconds and relaxing everything as you exhale. Do 3 in a row.
2. Upper Trap Stretch - Sit up tall, sit on one hand and with the other hand pull just the head (not the body) to the opposite side and hold a good stretch for 30 seconds. Do the other side too!
3. Levator Stretch - Sit up tall while sitting on one hand. Turn head half way to opposite shoulder and with free arm have elbow directly in front of your face while the hand grabs the back of yourhead and pulls it downward.
Just the fact alone that you are more aware of your posture and breaking up that bad pattern of sitting throughout the day can make a huge difference in how much upper back and neck pain, or even potentially headaches, you'll get.

After seeing thousands of people in over 13 years of practice there are definitely a few patterns that emerge among my patients. A big one is that the majority of people still think that when they are in pain they should go to their "doctor" first. By this, they generally mean their MD, or Medical Doctor. Often they don't realize that chiropractors not only ARE doctors, but that we are trained as musculoskeletal pain specialists, much more so than a typical family physician. Of course in the "real world" this isn't the case. How often depends on many factors from a person's age, physical fitness level or past injury history. Frequency of need is likely going to be different for each person.
In the "real world" however, most people go to a chiropractor once they feel pain or discomfort somewhere in their body. Back and neck pain are by far the most common reason people see a chiropractor but there are tons of other issues that chiropractic can help with. Most headaches, for instance, actually respond quicker to chiropractic adjustments than almost any other ailment I treat. Also pretty much any joint pain may benefit from chiropractic care. Did you know chiropractor adjust shoulders, knees, ankles, feet, wrists and even elbows!
Some common non-spinal issues that chiropractic care can benefit are carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee pain, and also sports injuries like sprained ankles. "I can crack my own back." Dr. Adam Sagedahl from Full Motion Chiroractic in Hopkins, MN here. Those are words I often hear from patients and many times they'll say they were able to "fix" something on their own by doing that. And while it's not impossible that they were able restore some motion to a dysfunctional joint, it's very likely that what occurred was more like a band-aid than any kind of actual fix.
I first want to try to explain what happens when your back "cracks". There is a fluid filled space within each of our joints and when we go about our day moving around small gas bubbles form in that space. When a joint is "cracked" or "adjusted" as a chiropractor would say, these gas bubbles are released and give off the sound you often hear. It's the same whether it's your knuckles, your spine or any other joint in your body. Other things take place as well that are part of helping the body to heal such as a release of endorphins, the "feel good chemical" (more on that later) and most importantly, a breaking up of adhesions that are restricting normal joint movement. It's these restrictions that eventually lead to your brain recognizing there's an irritation, and that recognition then leads to an inflammatory event which is what often is the actual cause of the pain you feel.
The big thing to keep in mind is that your spine is made up of several small bones called vertebrae that have a left and right-sided joint space with the vertbrae above and below it. The full length of your spine is technically one long "kinetic chain" of bones that have to move together, individually but in unison, with each other as we move our body. If one vertebrae becomes lacking, or dysfunctional in movement with another because of a joint restriction (usually as a result of an injury, physical stress or even poor posture) then that extra stress will be spread to the surrounding joints above and below.
What this then causes is the vertebrae nearby the area of restriction to move MORE than it typically would. It becomes "hypermobile". When you "crack" your own neck or back it's almost always just a hypermobile joint that will release and give off the popping sound while the problem-causing stuck joint actually takes a more concentrated force to restore the movement - THE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT!
So in conclusion, you'll often feel temporarily better (because of the endorphin release) after "cracking" your own back or neck but it's almost always a mistake to think you are fixing something. You're basically just getting bones to move that are already moving more than they should because they're trying to make up for another nearby joint that is not moving properly. The only way to fix that would be to see a chiropractor. Very often I hear from my patients that once they've gone through chiropractic care and restored the proper movement throughout the entire spine, they've either greatly reduced or no longer have the habit of "cracking" their own neck or back.

In this study, 747 participants were treated for low back pain. Each patient was assessed based on the first person they sought treatment with, whether it was a primary care physician, a chiropractor, a physiatrist (also known as a rehabilitation physician), or a physical therapist.
What the authors discovered is that the subjects who first saw a chiropractor had fewer advanced imaging tests and fewer surgeries.
Other studies have found the same results. A 2012 study reported that chiropractic patients had the best functional recovery and pain relief for chronic back pain.

We see a large number of men and women with headaches in our Hopkins office, and we've been able to provide relief for most of them. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that half of all adults deal with some sort of headache problem, so this actually isn’t surprising. One of the most common varieties of headaches that our patients are afflicted by is "cervicogenic headache" which, fortunately, chiropractic can commonly help!
What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from issues in the cervical spine, the upper part of the neck specifically. It can be thanks to a problem with either the spine itself (in particular, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it might be due to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine creates squeezing or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can give you headache pain.
How do you know if the headache you are going through is a cervicogenic headache? Besides receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare specialist, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes combined with pain in the forehead, eyes, back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches
Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is triggering them is corrected, it is crucial to get treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent solution, and one that can provide a great deal of relief, and often very quickly.
In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts looked at 80 people who had recurrent cervicogenic headaches. Fifty percent got chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the most beneficial effects.
Specifically, this study found that chiropractic adjustments provided patients better pain relief and decreased the number of headaches that occurred. In addition, it also diminished the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.

We care for a large number of people in our Hopkins office and Full Motion Chiropractic has helped countless people eliminate a variety of health problems. However, a common concern that seems to prevent a lot of people from seeking treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Fortunately, according to three separate studies (out of countless on the issue), the answer to this question is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe
The first research paper(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 adults. Each test subject was affected by spinal pain, and half of the patients received real chiropractic adjustments while the remaining patients were given two fake chiropractic treatments. Information was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to identify if any undesirable side effects occurred as a result of the genuine chiropractic adjustments.
The doctors found that no one documented any serious unfavorable side effects in any way after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some individuals did state that they got a headache (just 9% of people) or muscle stiffness (37%) after treatment, but the effects were not of a serious nature.
Nationwide Survey Reports that Chiropractic Care is Safe
The next study(2), also released in the influential journal, Spine, was performed in an attempt to ascertain the safety of chiropractic care. The test group was much larger as it involved just under 20,000 individuals. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.
Once again, the researchers found no serious negative side effects. The authors determined the risk of total side effects to be about six out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. Plus, just as with the first study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, side effects such as dizziness (less than 2%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children
The third study(3) is unique from the previous two pieces of research, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this case, researchers analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic treatment sessions.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the young ones, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse side effects. When parents were questioned, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Additionally, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

There are at least two different ways that you can get shoulder problems after an accident: by direct injury to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.
Direct trauma can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard object in the car during the impact, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end crash. With this type of injury, you'll usually be aware of the pain soon after the wreck.
More commonly, Full Motion Chiropractic finds that shoulder or arm pain doesn't immediately appear after a collision, but starts a few days or weeks after the trauma. This type of shoulder pain actually starts in the neck. Injured soft tissue in your spine can squeeze nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
